" 30th. The term closed this day with a public examination. We
are called upon for the liveliest emotions of gratitude to our
Heavenly Father, on account of the almost uninterrupted health
which he has granted to teachers & pupils; for the advance
which the pupils have made in their studies; &, above all, for
a work of grace upon the hearts of the scholars, which has re
sulted in the hopeful conversion of Henry Alexander, N. Emerson,
Theodore & Thomas Gulick, Rexford Hitchcock, F. Lyman & Charles
Parsons. Besides these, 3 or 4 more of the pupils have indulged
hope, concerning whose conversion we cannot speak with confidence.
The Lord has done great things for us, whereof we are glad. To
him be the praise & glory. During the year, a class has finished
Olmsted's Nat. Philosophy, & commenced astronomy. The class in
Greek have read 14 chapters in Acts, & have advanced to the 30th p.
in Felton's Gr. Reader. The First class in in Latin have finished
Caesar & read all tut one oration in Anthon's Cicero. The second
class have finished Weld's L. Lesson^,& read about half of the
Viri Romae. The third class have advanced to the third conjugation
in Weld's L. Lessons.
Died
May 21st, at Lahainaluna, Charles H. Parsons, aged 1? years.
Charles had been a member of this school nearly a year; & during
that time, he has gained the good will & affection of school mates
& teachers. Lovely in his disposition, prompt in every required
task, & ever striving to oblige, it is not strange that he was
a general favorite.
A few weeks before leaving the school he became a decided
follower of the Lord Jesus. From that time, his course was upward.
He seemed to feel the attractions of heaven, for his speed was ac
celerated. His death, though sudden was not without preparation.
He is gone, but not forgotten. Long will his memory be af
fectionately cherished by the teachers & pupils of the Punahou School.

Drowned
Aug. 7th Edward B. Johnson, in the 13th year of his age. He was
on his way from Kauai to school, on board the Kalihiwal, a small
schooner. The schooner was capsized in a squall before light on
the morning of the 7th, & soon went down. She was, at the time,
8 or 10 miles from land. Edward continued with the boat until
within a short distance of the shore, when he was washed away &
disappeared. If prompt assistance had been rendered, he might
have been saved. But he has gone, & his parents feel that there
is hope in his death. For some time before his death, a change
was apparent in his conduct, & his parents believe that it was the
result of a change of heart.
May God sanctify this sorrowful event to the g30d of the
afflicted family, & the school mates of the deceased.

Sept. 18. On account of sickness (the prevailing fever)
1 have been prevented from hearing my regular recitations for
2 weeks.

Died
April 24th on board the whale ship Arctic, Wm. S. Emerson,
for several years a pupil of this school. His health had been
failing for some years &, as a last resort, he embarked for a
voyage to the arctic: but his disease had advanced too far to
be arrested. Five weeks after embarking he breathed his last,
with a hope full of
immortality, & went, as we trust, to join
his brother John inheaven. John died July 19th 1849.

studies of this term have been much interrupted by sickness.

less than 3 weeks, only 9 days. Juliette Cooke 4 weeks &
4 days. Joseph Ives 4 weeks & 3 days. Harlan I. 5 weeks.
Edmund Rogers 3 weeks & 3 days. Harvey R. 5 weeks & 2 days.
Sarah R. 4 weeks & 3 days. Caroline R. 4 weeks. The above
attendance, for the most part was quite irregular, until it
ceased. The parents gave no reason for their children's staying
away; except in 2 instances. We have heard that some of them
stated as a reason that their children did not l e a m at Punahou.
But with sueh irregular attendance, could it be expected that
children would leam? Yet the teachers must bear all the blame
for their not learning.

Jan. 18th 1853* The term closed, this day, with a public

March 23* The Minister of Public Instruction spent about an hour
in the school yesterday, & a longer time today.
May 6th. The term closed this day with a public examination.
The scholars have generally made very commendable progress in
their studies during the term. The 3 young ladies, from Honolulu
have been veiy punctual in their attendance, nothaving been ab
sent more than 2 days during the term; & then, they
had a suf
ficient excuse.
The year just closed has been one of severe trial to the
teachers. Scholars have been unceremoniously taken from the
school in the midst of a term; then rumors were circulated that
the school was running down; that there was a general dissatis
faction with the principal teacher; that he was not at all fitted
for his office, & efforts were made to remove him. But in the
mean time, our hearts were cheered by observing the interest
which our boarders manifested in their studies, & their in
creasing desire for improvement. The Holy Spirit has also been
among them, & there have been several cases of hopeful conversion.
The Lord has been on our side, & we bless his holy name for all
that he has done for this school. May he ever have it under his
holy keeping, & make it a blessing to the world.

Died, Jan. 18th, Charles F. Gulick, at a water cure establishment, in
the State of New York. Charles was for several years, a member of
this school, but his health having failed, he went to the U. S. in
1850. He was a youth of respectable talents, & of hopeful piety.
His end was peace.
May 10. The term closed this day, with a public examination. Owing
to circumstances, a part only of the classes were examined, & those
in a very brief manner. Mr. Fuller has taught vocal music during 2
terms of this year, & the scholars have made good proficiency in
learning to sing. On the evening of Tuesday, the 9th there were
exereises in singing & declamation, & quite a number from Honolulu
were present. The singing appeared to give much satisfaction. Miss
Green has assisted in the instruction of the school, 2 terms this
year, & her faithful services have been very valuable.
About the middle of the term, now closed, Mr. & Mrs. Rice left the
school & removed to Kauai, thus creating a void not easily filled.
Mr. & Mrs. R. have been connected with the school about 10 years,
laboring in season & out of season for its interests, & for the
comfort of all connected with it.

The Holy Spirit has been with us during the term now closed,
& we have enjoyed a season of refreshing from on high. The pupils
who were previously the disciples of the Lord Jesus seemed to be
converted anew, and quite a number of the others, have, as we
trust, been gathered into the fold of the Good Shepherd. May
the Good Shepherd watch over & keep all these precious lambs.
We feel that we cannot be sufficiently grateful for what the Lord
has done for us. To him be all the praise.
